On 7 October 2025, Lithgow City Council welcomed a delegation from the Energy Industry Jobs Plan Review, including Professor Roy Green, the Independent Reviewer, staff from the Net Zero Economy Authority (NZEA), and representatives from the South Western District and National Office of the Mining and Energy Union (MEU).
The visit was a direct response to Council’s submission to a national review of the Net Zero Economy Authority Act. It was a chance for the delegation to hear directly from our region and better understand the challenges facing Lithgow as the nation moves toward a cleaner energy future.
Why this matters for Lithgow
Lithgow’s economy is still heavily dependent on coal mining and coal-fired power generation – with 43% of local wealth linked to these industries. Under current federal rules, Lithgow has not been recognised as a priority region for transition support.
Lithgow’s recognition as a priority region will be assisted by a change to the definition of what counts as a closure. With out this,
• Lithgow workers and local businesses may miss out on financial support, and
• Lithgow is excluded from early transition planning and investment opportunities.
Council’s submission calls for a more realistic definition of what counts as a closure – one that reflects how transition is likely to occur in our region. Council will continue working with the NZEA, the MEU, and other government bodies to advocate for fair treatment, early support, and a strong future for our community.
